Helotians looking for a cool treat to beat the summer heat will want to visit The Meadows Original Frozen Custard in The Legacy development on 14108 Bandera Road/SH 16 across from Old Town Helotes.
The quaint shop decorated with Hill Country charm makes its custard fresh daily and serves it with friendly small-town service. Customers can choose from classic vanilla or chocolate custard while two unique specialty custard flavors change daily.
In addition to custard, the menu features yogurts, sorbets, milkshakes, smoothies, Italian ices, sundaes, and floats with dozens of options for toppings.
The Meadows Original Frozen Custard was started in the summer of 1950 by the Meadows family in Pennsylvania. Today there are over 25 locations in six states and Australia. The Meadows Helotes location is the first and only location in Texas.
How is custard different than ice cream? Custards typically contain eggs and are richer than ice cream. The Meadows uses the original family recipe and publishes a monthly calendar highlighting the specialty custard flavors of the day. Some May flavors include Oreo cheesecake, strawberry Nutella, Rocky Road, horchata, and German chocolate cake.
Coffee lovers may want to check out The Meadows’ affogatos–espresso with custard. The Meadows’ team offers “pup-sicles” on the menu for the furry members of your family. If you’re looking for a unique dessert for your next party, bring home custard with pints and quarts to go.
Customers can get their treats to go, dine in, or enjoy a spacious shaded outdoor area. There are multiple ways to order including in-person, walk-up window, curbside service, and self-serve kiosks inside.
The Meadows is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
